Plum would be the first person to admit that she had a sweet tooth, but when you grow up in a place called The Kingdom of Sweets, you could hardly blame her. Sometimes she fancied that instead of blood, she had pure sugar running through her veins. And that was why when she was walking through the town and the scent of freshly baked fruit pies wafted in her direction she decided to make a stop.
Freshly baked pie was always the best, no matter the time of year or time of day. It was simply wonderful. When it was warm with ice cream on top, that was ideal, but if there was no ice cream, she could live without it. It was the pie that she really wanted with all of its fruity delicious goodness. So of course she had to stop and buy one of those pies. Magic could do wonderful things, but magical pies were just never the same.
So Plum stepped into the bakery intent on buying one of the delicious smelling pies, but much to her dismay there was quite the line and everyone seemed to be vying for the pies. Well, waiting in line wouldn’t be too bad, so she stepped into line to wait for her pie.
Vanessa could safely say she wasn't sure what she was doing in this line. What she did know was that she had been walking down the street, really just wandering, her mind thinking about her plan, as it usually was. Something brought her out of that line of thought. That was the smell of baked goods wafting from this little shop on the street. Vanessa looked around. She didn't see anyone she knew. Which meant no one would see her walking into said shop.
She walked into the building alright. She also walked right into someone, a blonde someone. She didn't know quite how to respond, except her usual scowl. She moved back a step though, staring at the line ahead of her, then her eyes going back to the girl. She wasn't all that into polite small talk, but, she figured she might want to say something about running into her. "I didn't see you." Not an apology, at all, but it was the closest she was going to get.
Plum was a patient person for the most part. She had learned patience over the years and though her temper sometimes got the better of her, she could keep that in check and at least appear calm and patient. The line was moving rather slowly, though Plum didn’t mind at all. She was quite looking forward to deliciously warm pie and the thought of it helped the time pass.
She was just debating with herself over what kind of pie she would like when she felt someone bump into her and she turned to face the young woman with a smile. The young woman on the other hand did not seem to be very happy and didn’t even apologize for bumping into her. This was quite rude, Plum found, but she could let it go. There was pie to be had and that made everything better, so she merely nodded in acquiescence and let a silence fall over them. But Plum didn’t want to seem completely rude and silence could often be interpreted as such. So she turned back to the young woman. “Doesn’t the bakery smell delightful?” she asked, hoping that a little conversation would be pleasant and help the time to pass a little faster.
Vanessa was neither blind, nor oblivious to people. She could tell the girl in front of her wasn't thrilled she ran into her. But like she said, she didn't see her. She stared at the line ahead of her, not quite sure it was worth it to wait. But, the more she thought about it, the more she realized that if she just left, the blonde would remember her more. Couldn't have that.
That's when the blonde started making conversation. Mentally sighing, she decided to chat it up as well, the conversation might make her forgettable, who knew. "Yeah. Smelled it outside, that's why I came in. You?" She wasn't in capable of being polite, she just wasn't good at it.
Apparently the young woman did not like conversation. She did not seem very pleasant at all, but perhaps it was just a bad day. At least she wasn’t being completely rude anymore, just not terribly pleasant. It was quite clear that she didn’t wish to enter into conversation at all, which was a pity. She was pretty and she looked fairly new. Plum didn’t remember seeing her and Plum was one to remember a face. That had taken a bit of training, but also a bit of luck that she had a good memory.
Not wanting to be completely unpleasant, Plum smiled brightly, and though the smile was completely fake it looked real. She had trained very hard to accomplish that. “Yes,” she replied. “I smelled the pies baking and I really can’t resist a good pie. They smelled so good I just had to come in. It looks like everyone had a similar idea.”
Vanessa looked at her, saw the smile she was radiating. She gave a small smile back. She decided it wasn't worth it to be totally rude to her, she wasn't anything to her. For her, every action was thought out and deliberate. Like a chess game. "It does look like that." then she added as an after thought. "It does smell pretty good."
So she was getting into the conversation, and it wasn't much like her at all. She'd just chalk it up to being intoxicated with the sweet sugary smells of the bakery. That was exactly it. Even these toxic levels of sweet could affect Vanessa.
Oh, so the young woman could be halfway pleasant. That was always a good thing as far as Plum was concerned. The small smile was a start, but it was getting there and Plum felt really good about that. She always tried to bring out the best in people. Perhaps it had been a bad day or something like Plum thought. Sometimes it really only took a smile to work your way back into a good mood.
Plum nodded along cheerily. “Yes, it does smell good. Pie usually does. I wish I could bake. I would make pie all the time if I could bake.” She sighed softly. “Oh well. One does what one must and unfortunately baking was not included in my training. But that’s what bakeries are for.” Perhaps this conversation would not be so bad after all.
Vanessa nodded in agreement with her. "I didn't learn to bake either." Completely true. She spent most of her life in the ocean, so there had been no need to learn it. One of the many reasons why she was how she was. "They at least seem to know what they're doing, or at least it smells like it." She was trying to be more upbeat, even if it wasn't totally working to her advantage.
She looked ahead of them to see how far they had to go. "Looks like we're going to be here a while." She said that with a sigh, but, for some reason the smile didn't break She didn't know why, but she supposed it was because it might be that she was possibly enjoying herself.
Plum had never learned to bake, not because she lived under the sea, but because she’d always had a baker that baked for her. In fact, she had a whole kitchen staff and it was a miracle she could cook at all. And most of her efforts in cooking were aided by magic of course. But it was nice to know she wasn’t the only one who didn’t know how to bake. She certainly appreciated those who did bake. Baked goods were just so delightful. It was a good thing she was a fairy and didn’t seem to gain a pound by eating all of these delicious baked goods.
Plum nodded. It did smell like they knew what they were doing. But then again, she’d never know the difference even if they weren’t making the pies right. Well, not until she tasted them anyways. “Well, I suppose they just can’t make pie fast enough. But I don’t mind the long wait.” She really didn’t mind the long wait. It would be worth it in the end. Besides, she had delightful company to keep her occupied.
Vanesa was smiling. It was a strange happenstance that didn't happen often. It was a very rare thing not a lot of people saw. But right now, Plum was getting to witness this happen. But Vanessa herself didn't mind. She actually thought Plum was alright to be waiting in this long line with.
"I suppose that's a fair enough thought. And since everyone wants a piece today, it's taking a while." And she was becoming more and more okay with that. Plum was making this tolerable. "I'm Vanessa, you?"
Plum would have thought, and probably would in the future, think of Vanessa as a very pleasant sort of person. Little did she know that this pleasantness was merely a once in a blue moon type of thing that just so happened to be directed towards herself. But for now, Plum was quite content to wait for pie with someone so pleasant and nice. Yes, she had been a bit rude and unpleasant at first, but perhaps there was truth in killing someone with kindness.
She was very glad to be able to put a name to the face though and Vanessa was a lovely name. She held out her hand. “I’m Plum. It’s very nice to meet you. Are you new here? I wasn’t sure that I had seen you around before.”
Vanessa was fairly sure Plum was a decent person most of time, which was true, just not quite as pleasant as she was now. It wasn't something she was really used to, but seemed to be enjoying for the moment. It was quite a change for herself. For now, she would take the situation as it was given to her.
"It's good to meet you too Plum. And yeah, just got here recently." Also true. For once in her life, she wasn't lying. Everything she'd said to Plum was a fact.
So Vanessa had just gotten here recently. Well that wasn’t so bad. Plum had loved the place the moment she had seen it. She had much more freedom and time and space to herself for once. And she was continuing her lessons, all while running her kingdom from right here. What wasn’t there to like?
“What do you think of Trenale so far?” she asked. “I know for many people it’s vastly different that their homes, so it does take some adjusting, but I have always found that it was very nice here. I plan to stay for as long as I possibly can.”
Plum wasn’t really one to volunteer so much information about herself to perfect strangers, but today was different. Vanessa seemed very nice and Plum almost could help herself. This conversation just felt very natural.
So apparently Plum had been here for a while. That was interesting, and she filed it away for in case she might know Eric or Ariel. All knowledge was useful for her, and she might be able to tell her something she needed to know.
"It's very different, but, it's not so bad. I mean, I am defiantly having to adjust of course." Vanessa was being particularly chatty today. The sugar smells were affecting her brain was the only logical explanation as to why she was being so friendly.
Plum probably would be no help when it came to knowing other people. There were so few people that she interacted with because she kept herself very busy between her schoolwork and the paperwork and planning and negotiating and whatnot involved in running a country. But she was good for magical artifacts. Those could always come in handy and her magic was quite helpful in that area.
Plum nodded along though. She could understand having to adjust. “And are you attending the school?” she asked curious if perhaps they might run into each other in the hallways or something. Or perhaps they would have class together sometime, which would equally as nice.
