Attending the school, well she was. Not to learn, she’d already done that part of it. She’d done it once before so it was the second time for her, however, there was no need to tell her that. “Actually yes. I go to the university. Not sure what I’m studying yet. You?” The line was moving, yes, but it was a slow and steady moving, so it was highly unlikely they were going anywhere anytime soon.
Vanessa wasn’t at all used to her own friendliness. This was something she wasn’t sure she liked. Yes, it was getting her into Plum’s good graces, but, what did that mean to her? It didn’t, if she were honest with herself. She didn’t gain anything from this. She would see her today, and then they would probably never see each other again.
Well if Vanessa was also a university student then there was a fairly good chance that they would see each other again. Well, actually that would probably depend on what classes they were each taking. Plum was taking most politics classes and economics and things of that sort.
“I’m also at the university. I’m a politics major. I run a small country so I figured it would be prudent to settle on politics.” This was accompanied by a small shrug as if to say that it wasn’t a big deal. It really wasn’t. Her kingdom was very small so it wasn’t a big deal. It was what it was.
Vanessa was taking a variety of classes, a couple of political ones thrown in for good measure since she did want to be Queen one day. It was her life dream to be Queen. Obviously, that plan hadn't worked, so now it was a matter of this new plan working, or she wasn't at all sure what she'd do.
"Oh wow." A fellow ruler! Her face actually lit up. A female ruler like herself! There was hope after all! She had always been worried that there were so few of them, so it was a pleasure running into one. "I was supposed to rule but something very complicated happened and so I'm here until things smooth over."

Plum saw that Vanessa seemed to light up rather suddenly. Apparently she had said something good and though she wasn’t sure what she had said, she was glad to have pleased Vanessa in whatever way she had. It was interesting that Vanessa herself was supposed to be a ruler as well. Well, the world always needed strong women rulers and she seemed like she would make a good ruler, so good for her.
On the other hand, there seemed to be quite a bit of drama involved and Plum definitely did not want to get involved in drama. Drama was not a good thing. She steered clear of drama as much as a fairy could, though sometimes facing the drama was inevitable. “Well, I hope everything will work itself out soon,” she replied. It was polite without being pushy. She really hoped Vanessa wouldn’t feel it necessary to tell her all about it. That was drama she could do without.
She could tell Plum didn't want to get involved, which was good, because Vanessa didn't want Plum involved. It was a whole messy scenario and no one needed to know exactly what had happened. So, really, it was for the best that Plum not find out about any of this. She didn't want to know, and Vanessa didn't want her to know. It was perfect.
"I hope it gets resolved soon too." She did. She wanted to get back in power and be right where she belonged. "But, enough about me. Where are you from?" She was suddenly feeling very chatty, you could always do well with a few powerful friends.
Vanessa, it seemed, was not about to reveal the whole of the situation, and for that Plum was very much relieved. It was always messy when there were thrones involved. She had seen it happen to several of her patrons and it really was not very pleasant at all. The less drama she had to deal with, the better things were.
“I’m from a very small country called the Kingdom of Sweets,” she told Vanessa with a fond smile. “It’s a very small kingdom, completely out of the way of everything. We make all kinds of sweets and candies and things of that nature,” she explained because otherwise the name sounded rather odd. “And I preside over everything that goes on in the country.”
Well, her kingdom defiantly sounded interesting. Probably a lot like Atalntica, a place not a lot of people had heard of and was out of the way. But she liked it there, it was her true home. Always would be, no matter where she was. The ocean was her home.
"I'm from Atalntica. Small kingdom too, out of the way." She didn't know quite how else to put it really. It was the most simple way of doing so, really. She gave a fond smile when she talked about Atlantica too, making it clear she missed home.
Plum was really quite fond of her kingdom. It was really quite nice to know that someone else was equally as fond of their own home. Atlantica had a lovely ring to it, and the way Vanessa talked about it, it sounded as if she missed home. “Well that sounds lovely,” she replied genuinely.
“Small kingdoms really are the best,” she continued. “They’re a little more work to keep them afloat than bigger kingdoms, but one’s influence can reach farther and touch many more people.” This was particularly true for Plum. Everyone in her kingdom had come to her at least once in their lives to ask for a wish, so she truly did touch each and every single person in her kingdom.
Vanessa could tell that Plum enjoyed her own kingdom, and she couldn't say she was surprised. Most rulers did like their own kingdom. It was a fact of life. It was their land, their people. It was something to be proud of.
"Agreed. It's nice to see the people." And know their every move. Vanessa loved that about Atalntica. It wasn't at all hard to find out what every citizen was doing. "After all, unahppy people mean a revolt." Unless they were to scared to.
Plum was very proud of her small kingdom and the work she had done in it. She was proud of her people, a good hardworking lot who never seemed to want for too terribly much. But the best part of all was knowing that they felt comfortable approaching her with any kind of problems that might arise. They didn’t fear her, they knew her to be gracious, but they always respected her. So of course she was proud. She was the leader of a wonderful group of people who looked up to her and worked hard for what they had.
“Yes,” Plum agreed. “Unhappy people do tend to revolt. That is never pleasant so I do my best to keep the peace.” She knew well enough that if her people wanted a new Sugar Plum Fairy, all they would have to do was kill her and then they’d get a new one to raise and train. She knew from history lessons that this was the unhappy fate of several Sugar Plum Fairies before her and she was resolved never to head down that path. She had learned her history.
Vanessa thought back on Atlantica. Her father had been a fine ruler, no one hated him, no one loved him. She however, knew she would rather be feared. It was a way to keep people remembering who was in charge. She would have been the first female queen in a long time. She knew no one would ever forget her. But she had messed up, she had gotten spooked, and thought her brother was going to take it from her so she tried to kill him, failing, and got banished. She was interrupted from her thoughts by Plum.
"It's not always easy to keep the peace." So, you scare them into being submissive, to her, it was the most logical solution. If people are scared of you, they won't dare to over throw you. It was the reason for most of her actions.
Plum nodded at Vanessa’s statement, though she would have been horrified by the running commentary that she didn’t hear. Plum was all about fairness, trust and respect. If her people couldn’t trust her then how were they supposed to respect their one and only figure head? Fear made people hate and she would never want that. She would never want to be hated by anyone, but especially the people she cared for and took care of. Perhaps it was best that she couldn’t hear Vanessa’s thoughts on the subject.
“Keeping the peace can be difficult at times,” she allowed, “but a little faith and trust can take you a long way.” She smiled at Vanessa. Faith and trust were essential when it came to ruling because no one wanted to lose a head after all.
Keeping the peace wasn't too difficult for her at all. She'd just use harsh punishments along with some example making. She was Queen, and that was a position that demanded the people's respect. Of course everyone had different methods of getting it, and she use demands. She simply demanded her people respect her or else. Not to many people wanted to find out what or else meant either, because they knew she'd follow through on it.
It took every ounce of Vanessa's strength to not look at Plum as though she were crazy. Instead, she smiled back. "Exactly. Respect and trust are both important."
Plum could tell that something was off. There were not quite in agreement here, which was completely fine. She would never want to make someone else take her opinion as well. That wasn’t very polite and everyone was entitled to their own opinions. It wasn’t within her rights to claim that anyone else’s opinions were false.
But the part that bothered Plum was that Vanessa seemed to be of a different opinion and yet still agreeing with her. Perhaps she did mean what she said, that respect and trust were important, but perhaps she meant in a different way. Perhaps those words held a much different meaning from how Plum had meant. And though it was clear what Plum meant, it was not quite clear what Vanessa meant.
Then again, they had been raised in very different places. She wasn’t sure what Atlantica was like, but it was probably a very different environment politically and socially that the Kingdom of Sweets. And perhaps Vanessa was only agreeing to be polite. It would probably be best to keep away from politics in the future.
“Have you started classes yet?” Plum asked because a change in topic currently also sounded like a good idea and school was always a safe, if not a tiny bit dull, subject. At least it was better than the weather.
Vanessa looked at Plum. She was clearly thinking about what Vanessa had said. Vanessa knew she wasn't that easy to ready, but perhaps Plum had picked up her true meaning. She hoped not, it could make things rather awkward between them.
"Actually, I have. I'm enjoying them. I'm guessing you like yours too?" She found her classes easy, and she was quite grateful for the subject change. Politics were clearly something they were never going to agree on. They were far too different. Like oil and water.
