personailty: You’d never guess it from his geeky appearance, but underneath the fifties clothing and glasses beats the heart of a lion and a wild streak that has really only shown itself when it’s just him and Ellie. All Carl’s ever really wanted was to follow his imagination, which is probably as wild as you can get. Even in his early adulthood, he has a love for balloons and playing pretend, but he's often too shy to display that playful side of him. To most of the world, he's just a quiet little nerd who doesn't even have the brains behind the stereotype. But that's just his shy shell and, like a turtle, he needs to know that it's safe to poke out his head before he goes and lets people see the less protected parts of him.

But once you earn his friendship? It's possibly all you can hope for, seeing as underneath it all, there's a courageous and loyal young man who will do just about anything for the sake of people he cares about. His inner daredevil means that there isn't very much that scares him and no, he's not your average hero at all...but that doesn't mean he's not going to try his damnedest to be a good one when the time calls for it.

And if you're his friend and don't need his avid protection? Then he's just a very friendly and playful young man, some would even say charming. With his imagination comes something of a romantic, though not so much in the Casanova way as it is the daydreamer who will watch a lovely woman, not even from afar in actual distance. More like...from afar in what place their hearts are. While she's laughing and thinking that he's just the perfect best friend, he's hoping he can be the perfect boyfriend...not that we're thinking of anyone specific. Nope

appearance: Putting it bluntly, he looks like your average dweeb. He doesn’t seem to have much muscle to speak of (no doubt the fact that it wasn’t until recent years that he lost a good deal of his baby fat didn’t help)…and frankly, he looks just plain awkward half the time, from the glasses to the somewhat square-ish attire that he wears back at home for the sake of pleasing his folks. All he really needs is tape around his glasses to complete the deceptive appearance of loserness.

Yet people who look closely enough could see that he definitely has a handsome quality about him, and maybe it’ll reveal itself to you through his shy smile, or the kindness in his eyes, but it’s definitely there. Plus, it’ll help that now he can choose his own wardrobe without any familial judgments. That’ll be nice…all he’ll have to care about is Ellie’s opinion…imeanwhat?

history: Carl was part of the generation that had some of America's greatest times of hardship, his infancy barely ended by the time The Great Depression started and then going almost immediately into World War II, and his parents, while loving, were very old fashioned and had strict streaks. In spite of all of that, you wouldn't believe that times could ever be hard in Carl Fredricksen's world, simply because he had such a sunny outlook and such big dreams from the very start. He had a love for watching movies from a very young age, and since his parents were often busy, they allowed him to do that on his own. By the time he was ten, he had one great obsession, and that was the adventures of Charles Muntz, who the news reels made out to be a great explorer who simply was ruined by a new reputation of being a fraud after visiting Paradise Falls.

The young boy was perfectly content with watching these clips and then going around the town, pretending to fly around like one of Muntz's blimps, hopping over cracks on the sidewalk and rocks like they were canyons and other such natural obstacles for the avid adventurer. It was on one of those days, when it felt like a day like any other, that he actually heard a very loud and exuberant voice from an old abandoned house. Being of the curious sort (not to mention the fact that he lost his balloon), he went to investigate, only to be shouted at by the owner of said voice, Ellie Docter. She was challenging him with, "Do you think you've got what it takes??" to be in her explorer's club, and the next moment, she was welcoming him aboard, but seeing as he was scared stiff, it took him a little bit to actually accept the idea that he was now in a club. Then she directed him towards a very dubious looking plank (which perhaps accounted for why the place was abandoned in the first place)....which led to him getting his leg broken. Probably not the most orthodox beginning to a lifelong friendship and first love, but it was enough for Carl.

As the years went on, Carl and Ellie made more and more plans to go to Paradise Falls when they grew up, complete with a scrapbook and crossed hearts to make sure it happened. Until then, they spent the past near decade of their lives doing anything exciting in their sleepy little town, whether their parents approved or not. Then came the time to go to college; Carl and Ellie had heard about Avalon, another land lost in time...but apparently his parents saw this as a step too far into the impractical. Until the Fourth of July weekend, Carl was stuck in that boring suburbs without the woman he had been falling in love with for years....come to think of it, with the sneaking up to his window and raising hell until his parents agreed to let him go, the whole thing read like a fairytale....so where's the happily ever after?

It's hard to say. After about four months of watching Ellie have a relationship with Shere Kahn, and after he resolved to be happy for her, he just...woke up one morning and his heart stopped working properly. He wound up dying in Ellie's arms...but apparently, Carl's story isn't over. Which brings us to a logical question: what now?
