Eric was no hero. He was just trying to survive as the living dead popped up out of nowhere, and if he encountered anyone who was struggling, he was more than happy to help them run for their very lives. So far, oddly enough, the only other "people" he had encountered were more interested in his brains than they were in being rescued. Right now, he was desperately hoping that one of them wasn't Max...that was, until he heard a feminine scream that sounded distinctly human.
The first thing he saw was Humperdinck while the resident psychotic jackhole emitted said scream while a zombie seemed to be lunging at...and that was when his blood froze. It was her...
Now, there was a part of his brain, however small (the boy was nauseatingly nice, after all) that was looking out for number one. That part of him was asking why should he help either one of them. It wasn't like anyone would miss Humperdickwad. He was renowned for being rude, demanding, sexist, pompous, and a generally unpleasant person to be around. The Florinese would probably give whatever zombie ate him a medal, and Nessa...Ursula...she was just as bad, if not worse. A murderess, an evil sea witch who had played with his heart in her mad quest for power.
It would've served them right if the zombie got them, was what this side of him was saying. It just so happened that Eric raced over anyway.
It was pure adrenaline that drove him when he leaped in front of Vanessa just as she begged her fiancé to kill it, the same adrenaline that drove him to pulling out Humperdinck's sword and beheading the zombie. Sword still in hand and without much time to spare, he grabbed Vanessa's hand and shouted, "Run!" before he dragged her. God, he never thought he'd be trying to save her after everything.
