As the final touches were put onto the cleaning and the school settled into life after the re-opening, the only place left to clean was the commons... the spacious central courtyard and its accompanying fountain seemed to continue to look dilapidated and ruined even after the vines had been cleared from the rest of the school.
Until now....
As the curtain of vines was removed from the portal room, allowing students and teachers alike access to working portals that would take them home if they so desired, there was a noise....
a pop
a crackle
a little flash of light, sparking off the top of the fountain
then another
and another
and-
water burst from the top of the fountain, arcing high into the air and pattering down like rain onto the paving stones, washing away the cracks and dirt and debris everywhere they touched. The water seemed to glitter and sparkle in the afternoon light, evaporating away from the stones to leave them looking fresh and new. As the water subsided into its usual spray, tumbling down the levels of the fountain and leaving the marble gleaming in its wake, the glow seems to fade away, until finally the commons were just as they should be, the fountain gurgling away merrily in the center as if nothing had ever changed.
Except... The top of the fountain, there was a shape carved into the marble, the water washing down from the tail of a bird...
