Personality: Eros, true to his profession, loves love. Yes, his powers mainly fall in the spark that starts the fire, so to speak, but he always hopes that his efforts can blossom into good, loving relationships. He probably comes off as more naïve than many other gods, actually taking his job rather seriously, and trying to remain committed to one person, and even seeming to take mortal life seriously…but his own wife was a mortal once, after all. And somewhere along the line, he’s come to realize that perhaps because mortal life is so short, that their ability to be so passionate and to care so much about things the gods try to write off as petty is perhaps the most remarkable thing in the world.
All the same, he’s not without a sense of fun. There are times when he’ll use his abilities to mess with someone that he believes deserves it (why do you think he took advantage of the fact that his father was clearly reminded of his dearly departed May upon meeting Alyss Heart? That’ll teach you to make fun of him for the Rock Incident of 2011), and more importantly, he’s always up for messing around with someone, whether it’s with a sarcastic comment, or a prank that he deems harmless enough to not cause any trouble, but hilarious enough to be worth the effort.
He has very little patience for the cynical, and will sometimes come off as preachy when he starts to monologue about how he feels about the world, which again, makes him come off as rather childish even compared to some of the more dramatic of the gods. Still, he won’t allow one of his relatives to treat mortals like they’re nothing. After all, what would really be the point of all they had as gods, if there was no one to remember them?
Appearance: Eros tends to take the shape of pretty people, and he can’t help but be particularly proud of his current form. He has wavy black hair and bronze skin, and just the cutest damn smile, if he does say so himself. Plus he’s got that jawline that could cut glass that his father seems to enjoy wearing himself. He’s not as tall as one would expect a god to make himself, but given the fact most mortals think of him as an almost naked baby, he can live with that, and besides, he’s got this lean muscle look that he thinks works pretty well here.
Given that he’s pretty confident about his human form, and is also not really trying to impress anyone, he doesn’t try too hard with his clothes. Just flattering enough that he doesn’t embarrass himself, but no so fancy that he runs the risk of being unapproachable. Simple t shirts and jeans, so long as they fit him well, will work just fine.
History: Historians often debate on who Eros’ father is, but despite the fact his method (and the occasional consequences) of striking love in people’s hearts might indicate the god of war, his flight abilities and playful personality points more heavily to Hermes, and he was always closer to him anyway. So if Mom wants to be all mysterious about it, fine. He’s pretty sure he knows the truth.
Even as a very young child, Eros was meeting his calling. Back then he wasn’t terribly good at archery, and was also easily manipulated by some of his family members (he still cringes whenever he thinks of how he let Athena convince him that Jason and Medea was ever a good idea), which might explain why the Ancient Greeks thought of him as a bringer of chaos. Still, even back then, when he got it right, he was really proud of himself, and loved the idea of bringing two people together like that. Sure, he was usually just a spark of lust, but still, everything had to start somewhere.
As he got older, however, he started craving that sort of connection for himself, but unlike many of his relatives, he found it hard to just bed any mortal. Not that he couldn’t do it if he wanted to, but he didn’t…but that all changed the day his mother sent him to make Psyche, a beautiful mortal woman, fall in love with the ugliest creature he could find. His mother had been jealous of her, and he could certainly see why, and hardly needed his arrows’ help to fall for her. Unfortunately, his new sister in law tricked her into seeking his true form, despite his pleas that she didn’t do that. Heartbroken, he left his new wife, thinking perhaps he was only meant to matchmake…until he found out that Psyche had searched everywhere to find him, and was completing the tasks his mother set out for her. It was then that he began to understand that love, perhaps, was more difficult than he ever thought, but to have someone with that level of commitment and devotion to you? That was everything. When Psyche was deified, he swore to never leave her side, to never stray from her, and wonder of wonders, he kept that promise, even long after their daughter Hedone had grown.
Also since then, he’s come to take his role a lot more seriously, and tries very hard to make sure if he’s to bring a pair together, it’s going to be a good match…he sometimes still messes up, of course, and it breaks his heart whenever a couple he’s brought together falls apart because of it, but he takes it in stride, and refuses to give up due to mistakes.
Other: While at Tintagel, his arrows’ power will have its limits; for them to work, there needs to be a seed of attraction or strong connection already between two people, the people involved can’t already be happily in love with someone (though if there’s trouble in paradise, well…), and his aim might be a little shakier than usual…do with that what you will.
TELLtheTALE
Sample Post:
Was that…it was. Somewhere in the midst of his regular search through the world for new matches to make, he had stumbled upon a castle he had never been to, but had certainly heard of, given half of his extended family seemed to have been there once or twice. He had never really thought to go there himself, but oh, it was always fun to find some pairings there, with all the different types of people from all different dimensions. And now it seemed that people were coming back to the old castle, oh he had to take advantage here.
There were a pair of girls in a ballroom…although it almost didn’t seem like they needed his help, well done Miss Karnstein. He’d probably nudge them eventually, but for now he’d let them have their dance. Sometimes it was best to strike after letting a relationship build a little, after all…but soon he stumbled upon the library, and caught a glimpse of another familiar face. A twinge of recognition and almost guilt struck him…he had kind of used Alyss as a pawn in his efforts to take a little vengeance on his father once. Sure, it had gotten her a beautiful baby girl (a little sister he really should check up on someday), but he knew her heart ached for his father despite her best efforts to quash her own dreams.
And there was a pretty handsome young man that seemed quite taken with her…oh, that would probably be inappropriate, right? She had aged a bit…but who said he needed to strike her, after all? Maybe…maybe a young man having a crush on her would offer her a confidence boost, right? Enough to finally move on, even! He stretched back his arm, aiming carefully…and he certainly hit his target…but the thing was, you do a job long enough, to learn when it doesn’t work quite as well as you’d expect. That man should’ve been completely awestruck now, but…he seemed to be barely affected by it.
Almost as if this had hit him before, for this exact woman, but…
…but nothing. You didn’t have to be a genius to figure this out, and not to brag, but just about every child of the little sneak down there was a genius. He lowered his arrow, and reached into his pocket. It was probably a little redundant to have phones in Olympus, given you could easily summon whomever you wanted, but both he and his wife were busy people. He dialed Psyche’s number, and sure enough, it went to voicemail.
“…hey honey? I’m heading to Earth. I’m pretty sure I have to make sure my dad isn’t doing anything stupid…and yes, I know that might very well be impossible, but it’s kind of a result of my own mess, so…yeah, I’ll see you soon. Probably. Love you, give Hedone the heads up please?”
With very little time at all, Eros was waiting behind the bookshelves, rehearsing his greeting once Alyss was out of earshot. He may have been ready to demand answers, but that hardly meant he had to clue Alyss in on his father’s trickery, right?
…right?
