Personality: In a word, slick. Nick is charming, convincing, and has been known to use those traits for all the wrong reasons. Having spent most of his life fully embracing all the worst qualities expected of a fox, he is used to being to talk his way into or out of just about any situation. He was good at conning people, and it was a way to make a living, so he ran with it. He’s pretty savvy with people, and has instincts that have served him well since he’s been in with law enforcement.
Once thoroughly jaded and disenchanted with the world, Nick is a recovering cynic, who has just recently (thanks to some intense life experiences and good influences) begun to let himself start hoping for better things. Even so, he still very much has a chip on his shoulder, and while he tries not to let anyone see that they’ve gotten to him, criticism tends to make him work that much harder to prove himself. He is well-meaning; his schemes have never been evil or vindictive, and he tries not to do any more physical harm than he has to, even in his job with the police force.
Appearance: In his own world, Nick looks…like a fox. Big ears, red fur, bushy tail. Once he came through the portal, he found himself in a human body, just over six feet tall. He has sandy hair, and has not lost his trademark smirk, which tends to show up even when he’s just trying to smile reassuringly. He has more than once been called “you sly fox” by people who have no idea that he ever was a fox.
Human clothes, well, he wears pretty much the same style as he wore back at home - he wasn’t quite used to that uniform, honestly, but knows how to present himself when he needs to in order to impress people…or at least he tries. He’s the kind of guy who’ll wear a tie to class but forget to tuck his shirt in, who will show up to a school dance in a full tuxedo and realize that he’s still wearing sneakers.
History:
Nick’s father was never in the picture growing up; he really has no memory of his dad at all other than that his mother used to cry over him. His mother raised him all on her own, and Nick was extremely close to her growing up. He was a smart, sensitive boy, and had all kinds of ideas about the things he would grow up to be. Thanks to some pretty heartless bullying at the hands of other kids, though, his optimistic outlook on the world was warped into a defiant, disenchanted pessimism.
He became determined never to let anyone see the impact their words and preconceived notions had on him; if they were going to believe he was a shifty person who couldn’t be trusted, well he was going to take that and run with it. And he did. Nick made a living out of conning people, selling them things that failed to live up to all the promises he made, running various schemes of his own devious invention to pay the bills and hopefully a little more.
When Nick met Judy Hopps, he had no way of knowing that their friendship would change the course of his life completely. As far as he was concerned, she was just another naive newcomer who had no idea of the terrible things the world could do to a person. And somehow, over the course of the next few days, she managed to steer him back in the right direction, pushing him to be more than the things he’d accepted he was limited to in his life.
Together, they managed to put away some nasty criminals, and in a series of events that even Nick’s mother (who always believed he was capable of bigger things) probably wouldn’t have predicted, he eventually wound up on the police force, partnered with Judy, and it looked as if they were destined for a glorious career of crimefighting. Like Chris Catney and Mary Badger Lacey, except one of them was male, and also a fox.
And then the portals started to open, and Judy, being the ambitious, tenacious rabbit she was, elected to go first and see what was on the other side. (Let it be known that Nick protested this vehemently, or at least, as vehemently as he could while also trying to politely correct a barista who couldn’t seem to get his order right). When she didn’t report back in, Nick took it upon himself to go and find her, without waiting for much input from the higher-ups.

TELLtheTALE
Sample Post:
Something wasn’t right. Nick leaned against the car, sipping his cup of coffee slowly, and considered the fact that his partner hadn’t reported back in for nearly a week now. He probably would have gotten some flak from her if she knew how worried he was, but…hey, he was more of a worrier than he usually let on. It wasn’t like Judy to go radio silent without a reason, which meant she must have a reason. Either she couldn’t radio back…which meant there was some kind of communications breakdown, or she was lying low somewhere to avoid being detected. And if his partner and best (arguably only) friend was stuck on the other side of some portal trying to stay out of danger…well, Nick’s place certainly wasn’t standing here drinking a flat white.
The problem was he had no idea how to get to wherever she was. Portals had opened here and there; some had closed, some were still open, but nobody had gone through one besides Judy so nobody really knew what was on the other side of them, if there was anything on the other side.
As he was considering his options, his radio squawked, and he reached down to turn the volume up.
“This is dispatch, we’ve got a report of another one of those…portal things, just popped up on Vapor Road.”
Nick fumbled with his radio for a split second before pressing down the button.
“I got it,” he blurted, sliding into the driver’s seat and jamming his coffee into the cupholder. “Sorry, this is Wilde, I’m not far from there, heading over to check it out.” That wasn’t entirely accurate; Vapor road was clear across town, but Nick reached up and flipped on his lights and siren, checking his mirrors before pulling out into the road. Nick wasn’t a big believer in signs and omens, but the timing was too much to ignore.
On my way, Carrots, he thought, stepping on the accelerator. On his way to where, he wasn’t sure…hopefully to wherever Judy had gone, and not to a gruesome death at the hands of space animals from another dimension.
