The candy shop was full of treats of all different sorts, most of which Akinyi had never seen. All she knew was that as she had been walking along downtown, the smells from this particular store had drawn her inside.
Now she stood staring at the walls around her, fingering the small amount of pocket change she'd earned doing odd jobs around the school and the town. Her choices were made a little easier, since it appeared that the shop was out of certain items. This made sense, she supposed, based on some of the news she'd heard about invaders.
As she wandered around the shop, she pulled down different items to sniff them. The thing labeled "lollipop" was giant and swirled, and it smelled like sugar and a little bit of fake fruit, like the jell-o stuff in the cafeteria at school. The thing that drew her attention the most, though, was the chocolate.
"How much?" she said, pointing through a glass case at some of the chocolate bars. She hoped that she had enough. "I have not tried candy before. How much is it? How much should I get?"
She wished there was someone, some kid perhaps, who had done all this before and could offer advice.
"It's about three of the small coins for a normal bar," offered a friendly voice. "It's pretty good stuff too, especially if you want just straight chocolate. If you're more interested in something with texture though, you should try out the caramel and nut mixture. It's a bit of a store specialty, and I'm pretty sure they're using---" the knowledgeable young man trailed off as a nearby clerk gave him a glare usually reserved for those who commit sins of the highest order. Remy flashed a nervous grin, before moving closer to the girl.
"I'm guessing they don't have candy shops wherever you're from?" he asked, looking down at the girl. She definitely looked a little different from most of the people around here. But it had been Remy's experience that different was the norm, especially around here. He certainly wasn't one to talk. He pointed at lollipop she'd been eying. "That would probably last longer, if you're hoping for more sweet for your buck. Doesn't have the kick chocolate does though..."
Remy trailed off. He licked his lips and turned his head to look around the shop again. The smells here were incredible, and that had been most of his reasoning for coming into the shop in the first place. When you had a nose as acute as Remy's, you usually lingered in places like this. Each breath felt like a tiny bit of Heaven, and Remy fully intended to soak it up.
Yet when he'd seen someone who looked as lost as he so often felt, and lost in a way that fell right into his expertise, well, he couldn't resist.
