Akinyi rapped on the door to the office, bouncing slightly on her toes and biting her lip. She pushed it open after a moment and stepped inside, trusting that her fairy godmother would follow her.
Apparently fairy godmothers did that sort of thing every once in a while.
Anyway, they had a very important announcement to make, so Akinyi took a deep breath, placed her feet squarely together, and addressed her superior.
"Commander Vimes," she said, squeaking at first then managing to clear her throat and get back to a normal pitch. "After a discussion with my, er, friend..." for some reason it seemed odd to say fairy godmother in front of Vimes "I have decided that it would be most efficient for me to travel to the island and provide security there."
She paused for a moment. "I...um. Flora has something to say." She stepped back so that Flora could have a chance to speak.
As Akinyi expected, Flora followed behind her into the office. Her arms were crossed tightly over her chest and she could do nothing but glower. She was glad she’d had the wits about her to coax Akinyi away from the caves, but she shouldn’t have had to. She was glad Akinyi was going to do the talking.
I…um. Flora has something to say.
Flora looked down with large, bewildered eyes at Akinyi. What?! When the girl stepped back, Flora sighed and dropped her arms to her hips.
“Do you know I found her at the Exit de Charly trying to make it tactically sound for the war? What the hell have you been telling her?” Flora snapped without thinking. She was just so mad and she really didn’t like Vimes and Akinyi could have been hurt and there was a war going on and this was all terrible!
She leveled her iciest gaze on the security officer, completely disregarding Akinyi’s formality.
Vimes was secretly growing fond of Akinyi. Secretly. Granted, she was very, very strange, and Vimes never knew how to talk to her, and didn't have a clue with what to do with her in terms of giving her things to do, but as far as he'd been able to tell, she'd been keeping out of trouble and keeping busy. Which worked for Vimes, who was busy trying to figure out what was going on with the armies and the potential war and the fighting. He was running frustratingly low on information.
When Akinyi came into his office, he was working very hard ignoring his paperwork (paperwork as a security officer, this was ridiculous), so he wasn't too upset about the interruption. "Oh--" He began, but was cut off by Flora. Who was scolding him. Flora was scolding him.
"What--I didn't tell her to do that!" Vimes snapped back, giving Akinyi a stern glance before glowering at Flora. "And I think between the two of us, I am not the bad influence here."
"Anyways," Vimes turned back to Akinyi. "I think that is a good plan. I can't be over there, so it would be a good idea to have someone taking care of business." Truthfully, Vimes wasn't sure what to expect from this war, and that made him nervous. The island would, hopefully, keep Akinyi safe and out of trouble. "You're going to have to be my eyes over there; think you can handle that, Captain?" He gave Flora a quick look that dared her to be annoying about this.
