Personality: Hiccup is a quiet boy, preferring to spend his time reading and building things rather than fighting or socializing. Part of this spawns from his failures to be a successful Viking. Since Hiccup is smaller and weaker than the other kids in his village, he couldn’t do the things that the rest of the kids could.
Like slaying dragons. Or being a proper Viking.
No, Hiccup is much better at creating inventions. He is very smart and innovative, and can usually come up with an invention to do his chores for him. He is constantly trying to find an easier way to do something, but his desire to prove himself as a Viking usually leads him to put a flashy twist on his creations (which also leads to their failure and his further humiliation). Fortunately, he’s a good strategist and a natural-born leader, which almost makes up for his physical failings. Unfortunately, no one respects him enough to actually listen to him. So he remains shy and secretive, keeping to himself instead of hanging out with other kids his age.
It probably doesn’t help that Hiccup is sarcastic to everyone that talks to him. He has a rather dry sense of humor which tends to alienate him from the kids in his tribe. When you get past this outer shell, however, he is a genuinely kind person who cares deeply about his friends. He is willing to do anything for his friends, and will put himself in the line of fire to protect them. It doesn’t take a lot to become his friend, either. All you have to is talk to him frequently.
Appearance: Hiccup is quite average in appearance. He has medium length auburn hair that falls just over his greenish blue eyes. He is an average height, not too tall or short. He’s not of a muscular build like his father or the other Vikings in his tribe; instead, he is extremely scrawny and weak. This, coupled with his freckled, childish face, leads people to think that he is much younger than he actually is. It doesn’t help that Hiccup almost never speaks out against such accusations because he’s got his nose in a book or is working on one of his inventions. He doesn’t really care what people think of him, so he makes no effort to change his appearance.
Hiccup dresses like the nerd he is. Modern clothes suit him more than his old Viking attire. You can usually find him wearing a t-shirt of some sort, usually in a dark green color, and blue jeans. He generally wears a light sweater jacket over his shirt, something with pockets where he can shove his hands deep in and slouch over. His favorite modern article of clothing is the shoes; he has abandoned his furry boots for the more comfortable low-top Converse or a pair of Vans. He usually carries a small sketchbook and a charcoal pencil with him, tucked into his jacket pocket for easy access.
History: Hiccup hails from the desolate island of Berk. He grew up in a traditional Viking village, raised under the loving care of his mother, until she passed away. The young boy was left to be raised under his beast of a father, Stoic the Vast. As the chief's son, Hiccup is expected to be a perfect example of a Viking and succeed his father in leading their tribe. But even as a boy, Hiccup was never good at being a proper Viking. Where Stoic was strong, Hiccup was weak. Where Stoic was brave, Hiccup cowered in fear. Where Stoic had killed tens, if not hundreds of dragons, Hiccup could not even kill the one dragon he had managed to capture.
No, Hiccup's past was not an enjoyable one. He hated the pressure on him to become just like his father. He hated the constant demand to kill everything that threatened them, when it was clear that there were other options available. And after Hiccup failed to kill a Night Fury - and the Night Fury didn't try to kill him - he knew that something had to change. Word of Tintagel reached his village, and Hiccup set out to the school under the pretense that he would be training to become a better Viking. In reality, Hiccup has no intention of training. He hopes to learn more than just how to kill and fight; Hiccup hopes to escape the confines of his life, and if possible, never go back.
Other: Hiccup is haunted by his encounter with the Night Fury. He often has nightmares about it, but he refuses to speak of the encounter.
Also, Raucous was here~
TELLtheTALE
Sample Post: At some point, Hiccup had fallen asleep. A very deep sleep. He hated when that happened, because when he fell into deep sleep, he dreamed. And lately, the dream had always been the same.
Golden eyes above his, boring straight into his soul.
A huge clawed paw on his chest, pinning him firmly on the cold, hard earth.
The smell of fish, fire, and death burning his nostrils as the beast exhaled forcefully over him, its face inches from his own.
He saw it move, saw it rear back to attack. He knew that he was close to death, but his life didn't flash before his eyes. No, his brain was frozen, latched onto the fact that he was about to die.
And then there was the roar. Deep, earpiercing, washing over him like a wave. He heard anger in that roar; anger, fear, and relief. The beast had been relieved. True, it hadn't spoken, but he had known.
Then it was gone, and he was awake again, wondering exactly why he was having such dreams. Didn't kids his age dream about girls or cars or walking into class in only their underwear? How many kids dreamed about almost getting mauled to death by a dragon?
Hiccup closed his eyes, taking a few deep breaths to calm his breathing. He could hear his heart pounding in his chest. The dream, just like the actual experience, still scared the everloving crap out of him. Dragons weren't exactly happy, fluffy pets.
But a part of him, a tiny part, wondered if they ever could be.
