Personality:
In one word: firey. Alanna has two key traits that both come to that word. The first is her steel determination. She has aspirations and she will do anything to get to them, even if it means going to hades and back. In one case this was almost literal when she saved her friend Jonathan from the Black God. The second is her temper, which rages hotter than her hair. If her amazing fencing skills fail, then certainly her sharp tongue won't.
Despite her temper, Alanna has taken Maude's advice to heal. Though her Gift scares her, it doesn't scare her nearly as much as what might happen if she doesn't use it. The last time she didn't heal someone, her friend Francis died of a plague. More than anything, she fears not being able to help someone, yet she insists that she never needs help herself. Even when she needs help, Alanna believes that she doesn't deserve such good friends, but in return for their friendship, they get hers. She's extremely loyal to the people she cares about and would do anything for them.
Though Alan is determined to gain 'his' knighthood, every now and then the squire reveals that she wants to be a girl, too. She likes to have nice things, and every now and then she even looks at dresses with envy. However, she isn't sure if that's allowed, even for a lady knight, and while she has a feminine side it's very inexperienced and awkward.
Appearance:
Alanna was one of the Trebond twins. She looks like her brother with almost no exceptions now, since she keeps her hair cropped boy-short. One such way is her chest, which presents no problem since she keeps it bound tight beneath her shirt. Just because Alanna is no longer in the palace at Corus doesn't mean she's going to let everyone know that she's training illegally to become a knight.
The second way is their height. While Thom is around average height, Alanna has never really hit her growth spurt and is still shorter than all kept company. Don't let that fool you, though, if there's one feature of hers that speaks of her personality, it's her bright red hair showing a hint of her inner fire. Her final notable feature is the violet coloring of her eyes.
History:
Trebond is a small fief of Tortall, a fortress to the north. The population is small and tough, just like the land. Alanna was one of the twins born to Lord Trebond and his wife, who passed away shortly after giving birth. After the incident, the lord of Trebond withdrew into his studies. Project after project left him unaware to his children and to his people. Like their parents, Alanna and her identical twin brother, Thom, were blessed with the Gift. They were instructed by a local healer named Maude, since their father was so busy. A servant named Coram instructed them on archery, horseback riding, and all the other things that Thom would need to know once he left to become a page. Except Alanna was the one who excelled in combat, the one who was afraid of her Gift. Thom was almost completely opposite in this, as he wanted to hone his Gift and become a great sorcerer.
At their tenth birthday, Alanna had an idea. She cut her hair to match Thom's and dressed in breeches and a tunic, while her brother wore her saddle skirt and a head covering. Thom forged new letters to the convent and to the palace, making up a story about twin boys, Thom and Alan. Since the convent ladies taught young boys magic, everything worked out for the pair, once Coram was convinced; or rather, frightened into obedience. (Coram was terrified of having visions for the rest of his life, something Alanna said she could do.) Alanna went to the palace and became a page.
'Alan' of Trebond almost immediately fell in with Prince Jonathan and his friends. Even though the older boys were protective of her, the tiny redhead soon established that she could take care of herself by sending much larger, much older Page Ralon of Malven running on home. She got along with everyone at the castle until the Prince's uncle, Duke Rodger of Conté, came to teach the Gifted pages, including Jonathan and herself, magic. The thought only came when Alanna was forced to use her Gift to heal Jonathan of a magical illness which had killed their friend Francis.
Months before Alanna became a squire, and before Jonathan achieved knighthood, they went south to Persopolis, the lone bazhir city. There the bazhir prime minister, Ali Mukhtab, told the soon-to-be knights (and Alanna) about the cursed Black City. That night, on instinct, Alanna and Jonathan went to the Black City. There they are attacked by beings known as the Ysandir. With assistance from the gods, they defeated the evil beings, but not before the Ysandir revealed to Jonathan that Alanna was a girl. He became the third person to know that Alan is not, in fact, a boy. The other two being Alanna's servant Coram, and the King of Thieves George Cooper. He was the last person to find out before Alanna came to Tintagel Academy.
She had been Jonathan's squire for less than half a year when she came to the Academy. She'd left right after delivering an old scroll to Myles of Olau, a trip on which she met two important beings. The first was her magical cat, with eyes as purple as her own. He could speak to her when he pleased, and to others as well. The second was the Great Mother Goddess, who gave Alanna her ember stone, which allows her to see magic as the color of the Gift that worked it.
Other: Alanna brought her sword, Lighting, her companion cat, Faithful, her horse, Moonlight, and her magic ember stone with her to Tintagel Academy. Dreams do come true.

Alanna of Trebond was nowhere near Trebond now. While Corus was only a few days ride from her home in the north of Tortall, this was another realm entirely, with people who had never even heard of Tortall, let alone of Trebond. A place where not everyone was either a noble or a peasant. This was a whole new world to her, and not for the first time she wondered what she had been thinking coming here, especially after being named as Jonathan's squire. She'd gotten everything she wanted when he told her she was to serve him. Yet here she was, without him. A fifteen-year-old girl squire who dressed as a boy and called herself Alan. For all they claimed they had people from every walk of life, she felt certain she was a first.
She'd brought very little with her, especially since she wouldn't be able to continue managing Trebond through Coram now. Hopefully he could manage on his own, and if not... Her thoughts were interrupted by a round of sneezes. Clearly her time at Tintagel Academy would be as unpredictable as the last five years of her life. She mindlessly fingered her ember stone, but saw nothing unusual. You're just worried that you won't be around to save Jonathan, her cat meowed at her. Alanna smiled, knowing Faithful was right. Not that the fact that the cat was correct changed anything. The cat was one of four things that she absolutely had to bring with her on this journey. The other three were the aforementioned ember stone, which had been gifted to her by the Goddess, her bejeweled sword - Lightning - which had been from her good friend Myles of Olau, and her horse, Moonlight, which she had bought from her dear friend, George Cooper, King of thieves. Other than that, Alanna had brought only some money and a few changes of clothing.
After stabling her horse, Alanna went to explore, and hopefully find someone to direct her to her rooms. It was so strange moving like this again, but what was stranger was not having Coram with her this time around. No doubt he would have remembered the letter she had received, or better yet, not let it get ruined in the rain. Yet another reason to hate rainstorms, the first being that she hated getting wet.
