Considering Door was supposed to govern an entire quadrant of her home, she was really not comfortable with the whole 'leader' bit. So, when she noticed that there was a book club, she forced herself to sign up under "co-president" rather than just a member. She wasn't sure who the other president was at this point, so she was sort of just operating like she was the one and only.
Which was, you know, sort of terrifying.
Luckily, Door knew the library like it was the back of her hand. She spoke with the librarian and got one of those sound-proof study rooms to be booked for the club weekly. Same room, too. Door had a few different books which the group could choose from. They would read the book that following week and then meet back to discuss. Maybe they could even pick the books for a few weeks.
Door finished writing "Welcome to Book Club" on the white board and turned back around to look at the empty room. She could do this. No problem.
Rene had seriously considered opting for presidency of the Book Club. But good sense and reasoning had pointed out that she was already co-president of the Student Council (whatever that meant), plus a member of two clubs. And there was the whole "solving everyone's problems" bit. She'd been here less than a week and there was already three things on her list.
Regardless, she knew she had to attend meetings for the club she actually belonged to. Normally Rene would know the library intimately well, especially considering that she used to work at Avalon's library. However, this new library was a little foreign to her, so it took a little while for her to find the room than she'd have liked.
So Rene only wound up ten minutes early instead of fifteen like she'd planned.
"Hello," she managed, nodding toward the girl she barely recognized before sliding into a seat. Within moments, Rene had a pen, a notebook, and a small stack of books out. It almost seemed magical. Almost, because Rene was trying to avoid too much frivolous magic, not when she could use good old fashioned work. She deftly copied what was on the board, and looked expectantly at Door.
Hopefully the nervous shifting wouldn't give anything away.
So what had Della said about needing a break from her book collection after having nothing else to do but read for most of last fall? She wasn't quite sure why she thought that somehow joining the book club would do her any good. Clubs were really for people who needed new friends and needed a backdrop for it. While a lot of her old friends had apparently fallen off the face of the earth, she still had the ones that stuck around, the ones that you could argue were the ones that really mattered. As for the whole reading thing...come on, did she really need a whole club for this one hobby of hers?
Apparently, yes she did. Maybe it was just because sometimes she needed some breathing space from just chatting with her father on whatever new insight she had gotten, or how glad she was that she had gotten a certain new book from the library before she wasted their precious budget on it...after all, just talking to her dad about books? It was probably a little sad. Besides, it wasn't like going to one meeting meant that she had to submit to eternal servitude toward the group, right? She'd just give it a shot, see how things went and...
Seeing as she was never the sort for dramatic entrances, the other two girls probably didn't notice her even though she had already walked into one of those little study rooms that she often compared to prison cells and felt were generally unhelpful. Which was just fine, seeing as she was probably looking like she was choking on something....well, you know, minus the attempts to cough. See, that sort of thing tended to happen when you suddenly caught sight of one of the people you had been under the impression had fallen off the face of the earth. She was so surprised that she wound up dropping her own notebook.
Well, so much for not making a spectacle of herself. Mildly embarrassed, she knelt down to pick it up, still giving Cimorene a confused look that she hoped would say, "Uh, hi, haven't seen you in a while, what the hell happened?" After all, she liked to think she and Rene had been friends, so this whole situation was more than a little weird.
Door offered the first girl a friendly wave and smile. She was fairly sure she had seen this girl around the campus but who she was Door wasn't sure. Her eyes shifted to the member list and she scanned the names, hoping to get some insight. No such luck. But this girl seemed to be interested - very interested even. She brought as many books as Door had. That was definitely a good sign. "Hey. I'm Door. Nice to --"
Door was cut off by another girl entering. This girl she knew - Della Miller. She was homecoming queen a couple months back. Door offered her a smile as well but it went unnoticed since the girl seemed to drop some of her possessions at the sight of the two of them. Door could sort of feel some anxiety, some confusion, but overall, there was nothing particularly revealing in the moment.
They all were silent, together but not interacting. Door shifted a little, moving her weight from one foot to the other. She felt like she should start the meeting - that's what the president would do right? She should just...start the meeting. Door looked over towards the clock on the wall. They were still too early to start really - above five minutes or so before proper start time. Okay, so she shouldn't start the meeting.
"Um, there are a few more people on the list so I figure we'll wait a few more minutes and see if anyone else shows up." Door smiled a thin smile and toyed with the marker in her hand. She leaned against the wall and popped the cap off and on the marker a few times.
