personailty: Shifu has been gifted with a lot of patience, and it comes in handy when he's dealing with his students. He rarely shouts, and it takes a great deal to provoke him to any sort of negative reaction at all. However, it's not the easiest thing to make him smile, either, and when he does, someone usually feels like they've earned something special.

He is very focused, and keeps his attention on whatever task is at hand. He has very sharp reflexes, and is not often surprised by anything. He can appear grumpy to some people, but that's just because of his reluctance to smile unless the situation actually calls for it. He is extremely dedicated to his craft, and does not have much esteem for those who don't respect his line of work or their own. In his opinion, one should not settle for something they're not willing to devote their life to, and until they find it, they should keep searching.

appearance:
Shifu is not an effusively emotional man, and is is rare to see him with a smile on his face. Along those same lines, though, he is unlikely to be found scowling, and has a calm, serene demeanor that is only rivaled by the intensity with which he trains his students. He keeps his hair neatly cut, and facial hair (which he usually wears, although sometimes he'll shave it off and start over) is always kept neat and his appearance generally tidy. He wears practical clothes, and isn't usually seen in a lot of flashy colors.
history:
hifu's life before he inhabited the Jade Palace is mostly unknown. He was taught by a Kung Fu master named Oogway, who, in spite of the fact that they were relatively close in age, served as a mentor to Shifu until the time when Shifu's skills were nearly parallel with his own, at which time their relationship shifted to that of colleagues instead of the mentor/protege relationship they had shared before. It was some time after that that Shifu discovered the abandoned child Tai Lung on the steps of the Jade Palace.

Shifu all but adopted the boy, trained him in the ways he himself had been taught, and for a few years, Tai Lung was his only student. However, after it became clear that Tai Lung was singularly gifted at the art of Kung Fu, Shifu took on another student, Tigress, whom he found as an undisciplined youngster at an orphanage. The two were his students, but more than that, they were essentially like a son and daughter to Shifu, who had never married or had children of his own.

Their life was a happy one - it contained a great deal of hard work, but Shifu was not a cruel mentor, and he was an effective one. When Shifu believed he had taught Tigress all he could, he recommended that she leave the orphanage and seek an education elsewhere.

But the pride and affection he felt for his two students blinded him, and he failed to see how dangerously close his first pupil had come to succumbing to the darkness in his heart. By the time he realised the change that had taken place in Tai Lung, it was too late for him to do anything about it. Knowing that the only person who could conquer the darkness in Tai Lung's mind was Tai Lung himself, Shifu let his student go.

With both Tai Lung and Tigress out of the picture for the moment, Shifu found himself somewhat lacking in objectives upon which to focus his single-minded determination. After some time, he realised that he might as well teach at the school they had both gone to - he could keep an eye on Tai Lung, and be closer to the students he had never quite been willing to admit were more like a son and daughter to him.
