Personality: Gandalf is an advisor, the old grey beard wizard who hobbles on the scene and overturns the chess board. Despite his recent alteration, he still possesses those characteristics and that drive. He often goes out of his way to try and set things upon a path that he believes will be most beneficial to the causes of light, going as far as need be, short of actual force. This desire and drive has been tempered some by retirement, and it is often that Gandalf will suffer a moment of frustration and wonder why precisely he agreed to this.
Outside of that drive, Gandalf is a knowledgeable man. He has lived for over two thousand years, and let’s face it, you don’t go that long without learning a thing or two. His thinking follows definite logical patterns. Still, he does appreciate a good joke, and has spent years perfecting fireworks. It has been said that his goal is to infuse the passion of fire within people, and flare up that life, and one can see that.
Just be warned, he can still come off as cranky, strange, and quite blunt. Plus, he’d addicted to a pipe, and has discovered something of a fascination with modern electronics, particularly cell phone games.
Appearance: Gandalf appreciates comfort in his clothes. He discovered the hard way that people do not appreciate it when you attempt to wear robes out of doors, despite having them for sale in most clothing stores. He decided that the next best thing is to wear a long coat, which he quite frequently wears despite the weather (he does have several, at least, one supposes). Other than that, he looks rather like one would expect a professor of maths to look. Well, at least a youngish one.
He does carry himself well, and has a fitness, a spryness about him that seems almost surprising. He’s also enchanted his staff to blend in with the current surroundings, and as such, he is always seen with a phone or a tablet computer of some kind, which he can and often will alter to be the magical prop. His sword lays mostly in his quarters, though he’s not afraid to use it if it comes down to it.
History: Gandalf’s history is long and involved, thankfully, most of the important details can be summed up in a few paragraphs. Being one of the Ishtari, who are essentially wizards, Gandalf walked the lands of Middle Earth for several millennia. His original arrival onto that world came with the great ships, coming under orders from the Valar. He would become something of a legend, wandering among the free peoples of Middle Earth and championing the ideas of life, freedom, and light.
Gandalf played no small part in a certain Hobbit’s unexpected journey to the Misty Mountains. While Bilbo was busy becoming the Hobbit he needed to be, Gandalf was there to help and advise, eventually leaving briefly to handle the terrible Necromancer, who had arisen briefly. He returned in time to intervene at the Battle of the Five Armies, and then would escort his friend back home.
Gandalf then spent years learning about Bilbo’s ring, discovering the truth of it. He would return to pass along a mission to Bilbo’s young nephew. Together with seven others, they would fight for the freedom of Middle Earth. Gandalf became a key figure in this battle, often stepping forward and lending sword and magic to the cause. He would perish in doing so, only to return, a more powerful being than ever before. Gandalf and the forces of light triumphed, thanks to the Hobbits, as Gandalf had expected all along.
Tired from his struggles, Gandalf finally decided it was time to leave Man to their own devices. He and the other ring bearers would journey to the West, leaving the land aboard the ships. It was on that journey that Gandalf was approached again. He had experienced much, and was filled with great wisdom. As a reward, they would renew his youth, and he would instruct and pass on his knowledge to a new generation.
Gandalf agreed, if reluctantly, and was sent to Tintagel, where he has been working at instructing students to think and act for themselves, as well as something about math and logic.
Other: silly to think dreams come true, honestly. It's hard work.
TELLtheTALE
Sample Post:
The man slouched in the detention chair, leaning back in it. One foot was propped slightly upon the desk, the other dangled beneath. A pipe was clenched between teeth, and perfectly round rings of smoke rose to the ceiling. If he was aware that he was, in fact, preparing to supervise students that had misbehaved, he certainly wasn’t showing it. For that matter, the man looked almost like someone who might misbehave himself. Though his current behavior was more along the lines of introversion rather than subversion.
He flicked his fingers across a screen, and a distinctive “waaaah†sound came from the tiny device. This was soon followed by a crashing sound and a mumbled curse from the man. He reached up with one hand, running his fingers through his hair before reaching down to his pipe. Leaning over, he tapped some of the loose contents into the trash bin, before looking up from his game.
“Ah, yes, you’ve finally arrived,†he said, greeting any and all students that were there. They’d likely been there for a while, as the detention had technically started three minutes ago. “Good. Is this everyone? No matter,†he rose from his chair, dusting off his long coat. The pipe disappeared into his clothing, and the phone seemed almost to vanish as well, though not without a squealing sound coming from it. “You’re all to come with me. There’s no reason for you to waste your time doing homework here. What kind of punishment is that anyway?â€
Gandalf, for that was who this was, took several strides toward the door, pausing to look over his shoulder and raise his brows. “Unless you would rather sit here calmly? Trust me: this will be a much better use of your precious time. And mine.â€
