Elaine was perfectly still except for the rise and fall off her chest as she breathed the slow shallow breaths of sleep. She wore her white night dress and her hair was plaited and hung over one shoulder. Her pale skin looked even paler beneath the fine layer of ice that encased her. She looked peaceful and serene, but in her mind, where she dreamed as she slumbered on, her thoughts were anything but peaceful.
Elaine stood before her father. The tables were laiden with that night's supper, but only she and her father were there in the room, the food untouched. Her father sat at his table, his face rigid with an emotion that she couldn't read. She hardly seemed to know this man. “You have disobeyed me,” he said, looking stern.
Though the words had been spoken in a normal speaking tone, but she felt the enormity of them as if he had shouted at her. The words weighed heavy on her heart and her soul. She had always done her best to be a dutiful daughter. She had always strived to obey and when she did not it was for good reason. Surely he knew this. And yet, it was so upsetting to know he was angry with her. She felt so small, as if she were a child. “Papa, I am always obedient if I can be. What have I done to upset you?”
Her father leaned forward, his eyes boring into hers. “You have left your mother to do your work so you can be galavanting. You think that the education we have given you is not enough, do you, that you must be tutored by those in Camelot and the Summer Country?”
“Papa, please,” Elaine tried to say, but her voice squeaked and she felt herself getting smaller and smaller with each passing moment. “I am grateful for my very unusual education. I truly am. But her Majesty asked and I could not refuse. And I have much to learn from her, Papa. So much. And I can still take care of things while I am away. And I shall write often. I promise.”
Her father slammed his hand on the table hard enough to make her flinch. Her father had occasionally been known to fits of violence, but they were rare and never directed towards her. “And what of men, Elaine? With your face you will leave a string of broken hearts. And with your face the women will only be your enemies.”
The truth of such a statement hurt. It was a sharp pain directly in her heart for not even she could deny the truth in that. She was known for her beauty and so far it has some her no favors. “ Let me at least try, Papa,” she pleaded.
“I am trying to protect you, Elaine,” he shouted in return. “Can't you see that?!”
Elaine flinched again, growing smaller and smaller until she was the size of a mouse. And then she began to run far far away from there.
