Farm Fact of November 29th, 2017:

Hay ride very rarely actually use hay. Hay is rather expensive and heavy. Hay rides are usually full of straw bales. Straw is the stalk waste product of wheat and is often used as bedding for animals. Hay is usually tall, dry grass that is used for animal food.

Farm Fact of the Day (November 30th, 2017):

Different styles of riding require different tack or equipment. Below is a huntseat saddle and below that, a western or stockseat saddle.

Farm Fact of the Day (December 1st, 2017):

This is a full grown Pygmy Goat and a baby Pygmy Goat. They are very loud and very cute and very dumb. They don't like it when you hang onto their horns.

Farm Fact of the Day (December 2nd, 2017):



This is a male Muscovy duck. I raised this breed when I was younger because it sounded like my last name. A Male Muscovy duck is generally twice the size of a female.

Farm Fact of December 3rd, 2017:

A horse's height is measured in 'hands.' A hand is four inches. A horse is anything about 14 hands tall and a pony is considered anything below 14 hands. The measurement begins from the bottom of the front legs and ends at the withers.

The clothing worn in several disciplines of horseback riding change styles throughout the years. For a while, very tall cowboy hats were the fashion while currently shorter and precisely blocked cowboy hats are the style.

When most people think of the comb of a chicken they think of the cartoon typical red spikey bit on top of a chicken's head. Farm Fact of the Day (December 6th, 2017):

Contrary to popular believe you do not milk a cow by simply pulling on the utter. That will hurt them and they will probably kick you and you will get no milk. The proper way to milk a cow is to close your hand around the top of the teat to trap the milk inside then gently squeeze the milk out.

Farm Fact of the Day (December 7th, 2017):

There are a few quick things you can do to check up on your dogs health in relation to their gums. First of all don't go trying to pry open your dogs mouth if they aren't comfortable with that and if your dog is acting out of sorts be sure to take them to the vet regardless of their gums, but their are a few things you can notice to help put your vet. Number one: Color. Check your dogs gums while they are healthy to have a baseline, every dog is different. However, most dogs have bubblegum pink gums. If you find that they are extremely pale, blue, purple, extremely red, or yellow. This are indicators that something is wrong. Number two: capillary refill time. This is just a fancy way of referring to how long it takes for color to return after applying pressure. If you push a finger into your dog's gums you'll notice the spot goes white for a moment. They should retrun to pink in no more than two seconds. Longer and something is likely wrong. Number three: Hydration. This is exactly what is sounds like. You're checking to make sure they are the normal wet and slimy nastiness. IF they are dry, something is probably wrong.

Farm Fact of December 8th, 2017:

Some common elements to perform in a Equine Dressage test are: Canter Pirouette, Free walk, Passe, and Extended Trot. Dressage tests are a form of performance where a horse and rider are required to complete a complex pattern marked by a large rectangle of letters.

Farm Fact of December 9th, 2017:

In the horse world, a spur is commonly used on the heel of a riders boot to help give the horse more precise cues. In the poultry world, Roosters have a large nail growing out of the back of their legs called spurs that help them ward off predators and other males.

Pigs are highly trainable and considered to be the smartest of all the farm animals.

Farm Fact of December 11th, 2017:

Female sheep are called Ewe and and male is a ram. Many animal rights extremists believe that sheering a sheep harms them when, in reality, it is not only painless when done correctly but can keep a sheep from dying of heat exhaustion. Wild sheep shed to keep this from happening. Domestic sheep do not.

Farm Fact of December 12th, 2017:

Sows often give birth is a rather odd locking cage that many fear and claim inhumane. In fact, Sows are kept in these pens because it ensures a safer birth for both her and her piglets. Sows are so massive and piglets are so small, Sows often accidentally smother their young and a pen of this nature prevents this.



Farm Fact of December 13th, 2017:

If you incubate a duck egg and it hatches you run the risk of the duckling imprinting on you. A duckling that has imprinting on you will follow you around and you'll have to teach it to eat, drink, and swim like a mother duck would. Luckily this mostly just involves leading it to these things.

Farm Fact of the Day (December 14th, 2017):



This is a breed of duck called "crested." They come in many different colors.
