Dusty grinned up at Costin. Practicing her Spanish would probably be a good thing. And learning the Spain Spanish might be fun. "That might be fun," she agreed. "I could use the practice." She shook her head at the question. "No, I haven't taken any language classes here. Not yet. I still have a lot of catching up to do." Turned out that there was a lot more history here than there was at home.
Dusty patted Costin's arm gently. She didn't understand because her momma had given her everything she could and more. She'd never really asked for anything. She'd never wanted to be selfish is asking for things her momma couldn't give her. "Well, maybe they will. Maybe they're just waiting for the right time. Maybe they wanna surprise you and all that."

Dusty was hopelessly naive, Costin thought. She had no idea how the real world worked, and she certainly had no idea how vampire parents thought, but for some reason, that quality, which would have been insufferable in almost anybody else, was somewhat endearing. "What do you need to catch up on? Have you found any study groups?" Also, why was he so concerned with Dusty's academic success?
"They don't want to surprise me," he said, shaking his head. "I know that much. What, I come home one day and they've got balloons and streamers up, surprise, we're making you a vampire, something like that? That is very much not their style whatsoever. They're just being hateful."
Dusty bit her lip. She had a lot of things to catch up on. Almost every single class she had fallen behind on. But that was too be expected when she had been gone for two months. "Uh, well I'm most behind in history but that's because there's a lot more history here than there is back home. This is the future for me. And I have a lot of reading to catch up on for English, but everything else is manageable." She shook her head. She hadn't joined any study groups. She'd been too proud and embarrassed about how behind she was. "No study groups. Everyone's ahead of me."
Dusty frowned. The idea of anyone's parents being hateful sounds just awful. Dusty didn't want that for anyone. "Well, maybe they have a reason besides being hateful. Maybe they just haven't told you yet. Maybe you have some rate disorder that won't let you be a vampire but they don't wanna break your heart."

Costin gave her a little sideways smile. "I can help with history," he offered, "if that's more helpful than languages. History here is a little less complicated than it is back at home for me." He turned onto the road that led back to the dorms, then paused, biting his lip. "I've just thought of something," he said, glancing over at her. "I'm not sure they'll let you in our dorms, you may need to sneak in while I distract the person at the door." He wondered how Dusty would take that; she didn't strike him as the sort of girl who was in the habit of breaking rules.
He didn't want to laugh at her; he knew she was trying to be nice, but there was just no way his fathers were doing any of this to spare his feelings. If he had a rare disorder...well, he was pretty sure Dracula at least would have brought it up to mock him if not to just put him off bothering him. The way she was so convinced it was just...mercy or something...it was almost tragic, even more tragic than his own tragic life.
Dusty gave a little nod. History was one she could use a little help in. After all, there was so much more of it now. The help she got the better she would do in school. "That would be very helpful."
Dusty frowned at the sneaking in bit. She wasn't sure that would be a good idea, but she did want to try pasta. "I suppose I can do my best at sneaking, but I cain't promise anything. I don't sneak very often. And only for important reasons. And I guess this in an important reason." She shooed him on. "Well? What are you waiting for?"
