Personality: Niniane is a delicate creature. In her heart, she is kind, sweet, and gentle. All she has ever wanted is to help others achieve the greatness they deserve. She is generous, and usually selfless, always thinking of others before herself. She loves dancing, music, and laughter.
But when the days grow short and the nights dark, the light in Niniane dims. She becomes more aware of herself, and more afraid of failure. She sees terror all around, and feels like she’s lost in the dark. No matter how much she expresses her discomfort, she still feels that no one can hear her, that no one cares. She has no way to prove that she can even feel.
In today’s world, it would be called borderline personality disorder. Niniane falls into a completely different mindset of the world around her. Suddenly, the bright and wonderful world she loves is dark, cold, and full of shadows. These changes happen often, and instantaneously, so one might understand why Niniane is so troubled. Her world turns upside down on a regular basis. Someone she loves one day, she may hate the next day. This applies even to herself, resulting in spontaneous episodes of self-loathing or depression.
Niniane's 'illness' is most likely a result of her separation from reality. As a being of power/a witch, her involvement with people has been limited and dysfunctional. These days she can't really keep hold of an understanding of how people work- are they superior to her, inferior, or different entirely? How do they view her?
It's an endless cycle of questions that have been known to drive her into hysteria and paranoia upon occasion. But please, she begs, do not give up on her. There is yet hope.
Appearance: Niniane is a beautiful girl, especially when she is smiling and being herself. She has long red-gold hair that falls below her shoulders, and slate-blue eyes that pierce the soul. Her skin is as pale as porcelain, turning a deathly white when she is in one of her moods. She stands at a petite but lovely five foot six, with a delicate frame that looks like it might blow away in the wind. She loves to wear skirts and dresses when she can, but occasionally wears jeans just like everyone else. She rarely adorns herself with jewelry, with the exception of the occasional necklace. She wears no makeup, preferring to let nature show off her beauty.
History: This is the part that is difficult to explain. Niniane is not a normal young woman. Stories tell tales of her existence since the beginning of time. Some say her hand wrought the world as we know it. This is of course folly. She is simply more than a little.
Niniane is the Lady of the Lake. She comes from the Lake of Avalon, and no one really knows what she is. The easiest way to describe her is to call her a witch. She has magical power that provides her with a means of influencing and changing the world around her. She can make changes that affect a much larger sphere than your average hedgewitch, and can both predict and proclaim the destiny of those she cares for.
This is the fancy version.
The simple version is this: Niniane is a young witch known to be more powerful than most. In the past she has cast spells of any nature. The most famous of these was the conception of Prince Arthur Pendragon. King Uther was very much in love with his Lady, Igraine, but as she was barren, she could not provide him with an heir. He went to the most powerful sorceress he knew, Niniane, and asked that she work her magic to give him a son. She tried to warn him, to tell him that the kind of magic he asked would require a blood price, but he was too stubborn to listen. He forced Niniane to cast the spell anyway. He found that she was right when his wife died in childbirth. Instead of taking responsibility for his actions, Uther declared a war on magic, and drove Niniane and all of her kind from Camelot. She understood his grief, but was determined not to leave the fruit of her magic at the center of such atrocity. She declared Arthur Pendragon her patron. Since then she has kept a close watch on Arthur (without his knowledge, of course).
This was about the time Niniane's BPD started to trigger. The hysteria and paranoia that went with being a witch in those times made life difficult, as did its effect on her social sphere (or lack thereof). She was like a witch in a hamster ball, able to see everything but experience nothing. So she decided to live vicariously through her chosen one, Arthur Pendragon. Whatever he needed, she provided...until it all went wrong. First there was Guinevere. Arthur needed a lady to be his Queen, and thus Niniane tapped Fate's scales and brought him the perfect Princess. But the darkness in her disagreed, feeling that Arthur should be loyal to one lady alone: Her. Thus complications with Lancelot du Lac, another mishap of Niniane's. Lancelot was her darling- an infant, misplaced by his mother and stolen away in a combination of envy and adoration by Niniane. He was perfect, in his own unique way, and Niniane loved him as she would her own child. She raised him as her own, and when he proved to be as perfect in adulthood as he was in infancy, Niniane sent him to Camelot to serve Arthur. To protect him.
Lancelot was supposed to be Arthur's second-in-command, the sword arm that secured his throne. But Niniane misjudged her own ability. She could not stand losing both Arthur and Lancelot, they were her joy, and alone, she was miserable. She needed Lancelot, but Arthur needed him too. The only plausible solution would be to have....two Lancelots. Niniane and her cohorts took upon them a project. Another child, one brought to them willingly, became her second Lancelot. He she sent to Arthur, and her own darling Lancelot....Niniane brought him home.
When Arthur went to Trenale, Niniane and Lancelot followed, but the power of the portals affected Niniane's magic. The move from her world to this one was what made her powers go haywire, which triggered her BPD again. She no longer has the nearly-infinite power that she had, but just enough to make ripples in the water. Now she floats between light and dark, unable to control her feelings. One minute she is Arthur’s protector, the next, his killer. For now, he is safe and secure...only time will tell where Niniane’s loyalties lie.
Other: Dreams do come true.
Another note: For anyone who would like to believe my character is out of canon, feel free to read most Arthurian texts. I have taken many interpretations of the Lady of the Lake and made them into one person. Vivienne and Nimue became Niniane, and that’s all there is to it. Not that I expect anyone to be ridiculous about my character creation, but I’ve been yelled at for loose interpretation before (on other sites, not this one), and wanted to quench the questions.
