Caz couldn't help it, when she hugged him and apologised he stayed very still, holding her close as she flung her limbs in apology. He tried to shh her, to tell her that it was all right, but she was sobbing loudly and he couldn't get a word in.
He couldn't stop her, so he let her sob until she was finally quietening down, and questioned him. He shook his head, a soft chuckle.
"I don't think you're an awful person, you're my friend, you're important to me. I just didn't realize you thought I was a prince, or I would of said something sooner, shall we put this behind us, huh?" he said softly, trying to show her that he really wasn't that mad.
Being shocked into being harassed for being something he wasn't was not a lasting feeling.
Lottie didn’t know what to say. She was always well liked, and boys did have a tendency to fall all over themselves for just a smile from her, but she couldn’t remember anyone ever telling her she was ‘important to them’ before. Well, she knew her daddy and Tia felt that way, but they’d never said so in those words. It just sounded so... she couldn’t find the word she wanted to describe it, but it was exactly what she needed to hear. She wasn’t sure she could have been so forgiving had it been her in his place, at least not so quickly. Chances are she would have just forgotten the transgression over time and all would have been well again.
Pulling back just enough to look up at him, she really looked a frightful mess with her eyes red and puffy and dark streaks of mascara running down her cheeks.
“Do you really mean that?” Lottie asked. He was offering her a clean slate, at least when it came to the bad things. But she was important to him, and really, he was the same to her. She missed Tia like crazy and she needed a friend here, someone to possible keep her from making more stupid mistakes like the one she had just made with Caz.
Caz blinked, "Of course I do!" he told her gently, his grip still gentle and reassuring in the hug. She was definitely a sight, all her mascara has ran so she looked like she'd been drawing on her face with magic marker, but her eyes were so blue and wide and upset that even if it was funny Caz couldn't laugh.
"Of course Lottie," he repeated for added reassurance, but much softer; his hands rubbing her shoulders, she had still been wearing his jacket, and he was getting a little cold. "Why don't we quickly finish up our drinks and go sit inside? You'll catch a cold in this weather"
He let go of her and gave her a smile, he felt good that he could just, forgive her for such a small mistake, he had a feeling that his old self wasn't too good at that...that made him frown a little, wondering again, and certianlly not the last time what kind of man he used to be, before putting that smile on again.
The extra reassurance wasn’t necessary, Caz just looked so sincere, but Lottie appreciated it nonetheless. The way he was looking at her, and being all sweet and reassuring.. for a moment she almost wanted to go on pretending that he was a prince, at least to herself, or maybe, just maybe, tell herself that it really didn’t matter. He was just standing so close and being so nice and it wouldn’t take much to just stand up on her tiptoes and...
Oh, but he was pulling away, and after a moment taken to shake herself out of her daze, Lottie realized this was a good thing. She had been about to let the moment carry her away again and it would have just messed everything all up. Again. She was here to find herself a prince, gosh darn it, and she couldn’t let every sweet, handsome, caring boy who made her heart flutter distract her from that.
“Okay,” Lottie agreed. Kneeling back on the blanket, she fished a handkerchief from her handbag and wiped at her make-up stained cheeks. “I guess I shoulda brought hot chocolate instead, huh?” she tried to joke, just wanting to shake the uncomfortable air between them and get that peaceful, easy feeling back. He had been so open with her abotu what was bothering him and she hoped she hadn’t ruined that trust.
